This study examines how ChatGPT integration influences reflective writing processes among graduate students, with particular focus on differential usage patterns across achievement levels and perceived impacts on reflective thinking process. Twelve graduate students enrolled in an instructional design course at a South Korean university participated in this case study. Data collection included reflective writing, ChatGPT interaction logs, and semi-structured focus group interviews, which were analyzed using process mining and thematic analysis. The process mining results revealed distinct usage patterns: high-achieving students demonstrated three sophisticated approaches-discussion-oriented dialogue, knowledge acquisition with translation, and iterative generation-review cycles-while low-achieving students predominantly engaged in surface level information retrieval and translation. Thematic analysis yielded four major themes: writing assistance functions, reflection facilitation capabilities, perceived limitations, and AI literacy requirements. High achievers leveraged ChatGPT for deepening critical thinking through discussion and conceptual exploration, whereas low achievers primarily used it for linguistic support. The findings suggest that effective ChatGPT integration depends critically on students' AI literacy levels and metacognitive awareness. This research provides empirical evidence for designing pedagogical frameworks that optimize AI-assisted reflective writing, emphasizing the need for explicit AI literacy instruction, structured prompting strategies, and institutional guidelines balancing technological affordances with learner autonomy. |
