In Kazakhstan, there is a growing need for educational tools tailored to Korean language learning. Unlike generic language learning apps, the mobile app “Qoianee” uniquely enables direct learning from Kazakh to Korean, addressing this linguistic gap. This study applied a structured three-stage usability testing methodology: (1) adaptation of a usability testing tool based on a literature review, (2) usability testing with recruited participants, and (3) identification of improvement areas through mixed-method analysis.* Fifteen participants, diverse in gender, age, major and Korean proficiency, evaluated the app’s effectiveness, efficiency, satisfaction, learnability, and cognitive load. Usability scores were consistent across demographics, indicating broad applicability. Results showed strong performance in accessibility, interface design, and structured learning, with improvements needed in cognitive load management and content variety. Users appreciated the app’s memorability and interface but suggested enhanced interaction and multimedia features, especially for advanced learners. This study highlights the value of culturally and linguistically tailored Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) tools and offers practical recommendations for refining “Qoianee”, contributing to the development of inclusive, accessible language learning applications. The findings provide practical design recommendations for optimizing cognitive load in mobile applications and highlight pathways for developing more inclusive, user friendly, and pedagogically sound language learning resources.
